The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC has summoned what the unions described as an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting, NEC.

The Trade Union Congress ,TUC, is set to hold an extraordinary National Executive Council ,NEC, meeting to review the planned strike following the brutalization of the National President of the union, Joe Ajaero, during a state-wide protest.

Recall that Born on December 17, 1964, Joe Ajaero is a Nigerian journalist and unionist who serves as the national president of the Nigerian Labour Congress at the moment.

He succeeded Ayuba Wabba, who held office from 2015 to 2023 for two terms. On December 17, 1964, Joe Ajaero was born in Emekuku, Owerri North, Imo State.

This meeting will also aim to review the Memorandum of Understanding ,MOU, signed between the Federal Government and the Organized Labor on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, which has led to “untold hardship” for Nigerians.

The meeting is expected to address the injustice against Joe Ajaero, discuss the planned strike, and assess the MOU’s terms and conditions. The TUC’s National Vice-President, Tommy Etim, mentioned that more details would be revealed after the meeting.

It’s important to note that the TUC and the Nigeria Labour Congress , NLC , had issued a five-day ultimatum over Ajaero’s arrest by the police in Imo State and demanded the redeployment of the state’s commissioner of police, as well as the arrest and prosecution of a government aide who allegedly attacked Ajaero.

If their demands are not met within the given timeframe, the labor unions threatened to embark on a nationwide industrial action.

The incident involving Ajaero has generated widespread condemnation and concern from various quarters, with allegations of police misconduct and political interference.
