Niger State’s government has forged a groundbreaking partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company , NNPC, Ltd to pursue an ambitious green economy and energy development initiative encompassing four unique projects.
These projects will significantly contribute to sustainable development and enhance the region’s energy resources.
The four projects include a Greenfield Hydroelectric power project, the establishment of mega solar parks within various institutions, and the implementation of a home solar system for around 250,000 households, out of the total 800,000 households in Niger State.
Furthermore, the partnership aims to establish a 500 million-liter Ethanol plant while cultivating Maize, Sugarcane, and Sweet Sorghum on a vast 100,000 hectares of land within Niger State. This agricultural endeavor will yield over 500,000 tons of crops to supply the ethanol plant.
A notable aspect of the partnership is NNPC‘s commitment to planting 135 million trees on 100,000 hectares of land, in alignment with their dedication to climate protection and carbon sequestration to achieve their 2030 net-zero targets.
Governor Hon. Mohammed Bago emphasized Niger State’s commitment to planting one billion trees on a million hectares of land over the next eight years.
The partnership is poised to involve other global oil and gas companies, as well as participants from the shipping, airline, cement industries, and various United Nations agencies, all working together to achieve the impressive goal of planting one billion trees.
This partnership signifies a significant step forward in promoting environmental sustainability and renewable energy in Niger State, ushering in a new era of innovative and environmentally conscious development within the region.
