In a significant initiative, the Federal Government of Nigeria has granted scholarships to 179 students to pursue various programs in Russia.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during the 2023/2024 pre-departure briefing of Bilateral Education Agreement Scholars bound for Russia.
Prof. Mamman emphasized that the selection of these students aligns with a broader strategy to support bright Nigerians, especially those who may face financial constraints, in obtaining knowledge, skills, and competence not readily available within the country.
The scholarship program aims to contribute to Nigeria’s development agenda by nurturing talents that may otherwise lack access to specialized education.
The minister, represented by Mrs. Rakiya Ilyasu, the Director of Universities Education in the ministry, urged the scholars not to view this opportunity as mere freedom but as a responsibility to uphold the values instilled in them.
He highlighted the significant investment made in their education, emphasizing the expectation that they contribute to the nation’s growth upon their return.
The first batch of students is already en route to the airport, with subsequent batches scheduled to depart on November 15 and November 17. Prof. Mamman urged the scholars to focus on their studies, uphold good values, and be exemplary ambassadors of Nigeria in their host country.
Additionally, the minister emphasized the importance of abiding by the laws of the host country and maintaining contact with the Nigerian Embassy in Moscow. He urged the scholars to be conscious of their roles as representatives of their nation and to harness their newfound knowledge and skills for Nigeria’s development.
Director of the Federal Scholarship Board, Asta Ndajiwo, shared insights into the selection process, highlighting the journey that began with thousands of applications in November 2022. While expressing joy for the successful candidates, Ndajiwo cautioned against engaging in risky activities, recalling previous incidents where scholars lost their lives while swimming.
This scholarship initiative not only provides educational opportunities but also reinforces the government’s commitment to nurturing and utilizing the potential of young Nigerians for the nation’s progress. As these scholars embark on their academic journey in Russia, the hope is that they will return equipped to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s development.
