In a heartfelt expression of gratitude, President Julius Bio of Sierra Leone lauded the Nigerian government for its unwavering support in fostering developmental growth, progress, and the restoration of peace in his country.
The warm acknowledgment took place on a significant occasion – the UN World Day – where delegates from various nations, including Angola and Nigeria, gathered at the Presidential Lodge in Freetown.
President Bio extended his appreciation specifically to Nigeria, highlighting the country’s instrumental role in supporting Sierra Leone’s resolution presented at the United Nations on November 18.
The resolution aimed to dedicate this day to recognizing the victims of sexual harassment and related atrocities, particularly women and girls who have suffered. The Sierra Leonean leader expressed deep gratitude for the collaborative effort that led to the successful passage of the resolution.
Acknowledging Nigeria’s military support, President Bio recounted how the country played a crucial role in helping Sierra Leone overcome the challenges of war, ultimately contributing to the restoration of peace.
He took a moment to express his gratitude, saying, “At this juncture, I want to say thank you to everyone who made this day possible.”
President Bio shed light on the proactive measures his government has undertaken to address issues affecting women and the girl child.
The enactment of laws on gender equality through the judiciary stands as a testament to Sierra Leone’s commitment to championing the cause of women’s rights.
Dr. Fatima Bio, the President’s wife, also expressed gratitude, singling out Nigeria and its First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for their presence in commemorating the first anniversary of the UN World Day Against Rape and Girl-Child Exploitation.
In a touching moment, she thanked Sen. Tinubu for being a source of inspiration and emphasized Nigeria’s significant role as Sierra Leone’s big brother, offering support during challenging times, including periods of war.
The President’s wife acknowledged Sen. Tinubu’s presence as an honor, urging women to emulate her example.
The deep appreciation expressed by both leaders underscored the strong bond and shared history between Sierra Leone and Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of solidarity in fostering positive change and addressing critical issues affecting women and girls.
