Gunmen, suspected to be political thugs, have reportedly attacked the residence of Edison Ehie, the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly in Port Harcourt.
Ehie, who declared himself Speaker amid a crisis within the State legislature, had faced suspension by 24 lawmakers. The attackers, believed to be involved in an assassination attempt, targeted Ehie’s residence, but his security details successfully repelled the assault.
A statement by a Legislative Correspondent of the State House of Assembly alleges that the attack was led by a head of a security tactical unit in the State, raising concerns about the role of senior security officers in the incident.
Details of the attack remain unclear, and it is yet to be confirmed if there were casualties or damage during the invasion. The Legislative Correspondent, Ken Uchendu, promises to release CCTV footage of the incident for public confirmation and record purposes.
Uchendu warns that some senior security officers in the State should be held responsible if any harm befalls Speaker Ehie and his household. The incident adds to the ongoing political tensions and power struggles within the Rivers State House of Assembly.
As the situation unfolds, concerns are raised about the broader implications for political stability and security in Rivers State. The alleged involvement of political thugs and security officers in an attack on a public official’s residence underscores the challenges of maintaining law and order in the region.
The incident may prompt increased scrutiny of the security apparatus and a call for accountability in addressing the root causes of political unrest in Rivers State.
