The Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States ,ECOWAS has made a heartfelt appeal to the Heads of State and Government in the region, urging them to lift the sanctions imposed on Niger Republic.
The sanctions were instituted in response to the ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum by certain military officers led by former Presidential Guard Commander, General Abdourahamane Tchiani.
Last July, the Heads of State in ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Niger Republic as a protest against the political developments in the country. However, the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume, stressed that the sanctions have had severe consequences, particularly on the citizens of states in Nigeria that share borders with Niger Republic.
He cited hardships faced by children and women and emphasized that no meaningful progress has been made in resolving the political impasse.
Addressing journalists after the opening session of the parliament, Senator Ndume appealed for the lifting of sanctions, emphasizing the humanitarian impact and the plight of the affected population.
He highlighted that the closed border between Niger and Nigeria has disproportionately affected the poor, and called for the collective consideration of the humanitarian situation in the region.
The appeal from the ECOWAS Parliament underscores the ongoing efforts to address the political crisis in Niger Republic and seeks to alleviate the hardships faced by the citizens. As the situation unfolds, the hope is for a resolution that not only eases the suffering of the affected population but also contributes to the stability and progress of the region.
