The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, has rescued a construction worker trapped in a partially collapsed building under construction in Abuja.
It was gathered that the worker was trapped on Saturday when a part of a building under construction close to Taj Bank in the Central Business District area of the territory collapsed.
Head of Public Affairs of FEMA, Nkechi Isa, in a statement on Sunday disclosed that the victim, who is a labourer, was working on the first floor of the building when the entire cast fell on him.
Isa said the agency was informed about the collapse one hour after the construction workers failed to rescue their trapped colleague, adding that the victim had been rescued and taken to the Trauma Centre of the National Hospital, Abuja for medical attention.
The cause of the partial collapse of the building is however unclear.
“FEMA’s Search and Rescue Team and the FCT Fire Service responded to the distress call and were able to rescue the trapped man with the aid of extrication equipment and the construction company’s excavator”, she said.
Visiting the site, FEMA’s Acting Director-General, Mohammed Sabo, cautioned developers to always adhere to the building codes and standards.
He called on construction companies and developers to avoid the use of substandard materials or cut corners during construction, adding that they should prioritise the safety of their workers during construction and that of the ultimate consumers who are the future occupants of the building.
