The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has sacked the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, a member representing Umaisha/ Ugya state constituency in the State House of Assembly.
The speaker, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress in the State was a highest ranking member in the State House of Assembly.
The court declared the candidate of the opposition People’s Democratic party, PDP, Hon. Sa’ad Abdullahi Ibrahim as the rightful winner of the March 18, 2023 election for the Umaisha/Ugya State Constituency.
The the Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Abdullahi winner of the election but Ibrahim challenged his victory at the tribunal.
The petitioner had told the tribunal that there was overvoting and that the election was not in compliance with the Electoral Act.
However, the three-member tribunal panel led by Justice Francisca Isong Nnang upheld the victory of the speaker, saying the petitioners failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the allegations of overvoting as well as non-compliance with the Electoral Act.
Dissatisfied with the tribunal outcome, the PDP candidate headed for the Court of Appeal, which declared him winner of the election.
