Tremendous progress has been made by Nigeria at the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup African qualifiers in Namibia, as highlighted by President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Uyi Akpata.
Despite missing out on tickets to the USA and West Indies next year, Nigeria’s men’s national team, the Yellow-Greens, showcased their capabilities in a competitive environment.
In the recent match against Zimbabwe, Nigeria’s performance was commendable, posting 110 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs, though ultimately facing a defeat by six wickets.
Former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, a cricket enthusiast, witnessed the game in Windhoek alongside Akpata and other NCF officials.
Akpata emphasized that Nigeria’s participation has announced its arrival as a cricket-playing nation, showcasing competitiveness against strong opponents like Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
The president highlighted players like Prosper Useni, Ridwan Abdulkareen, and Joshua Asia, gaining global recognition.
Despite the fifth-place finish, Akpata believes the outcome enhances Nigeria’s global cricketing image and advertises the country’s developmental efforts to top cricketing nations in Africa.
Looking forward, the focus remains on the goal to participate in the 2026 World Cup, indicating Nigeria’s promising trajectory in international cricket.
The remaining Namibian encounter will be an opportunity for Nigeria to play for pride and further solidify its presence in the cricketing arena.
