In a historic moment, President Bola Tinubu presented the 2024 budget estimates to a joint session of the National Assembly, marking his first budget presentation since assuming office as the Commander in Chief.
The event was significant not only for being Tinubu’s inaugural budget but also because a former National Assembly member had returned to the presidency.
Dressed in all white, President Tinubu arrived at the temporary chamber of the House of Representatives to cheers from lawmakers, accompanied by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and others.
The presentation began promptly with the House already in plenary for the day, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
Despite the formal nature of the occasion, the atmosphere was convivial. The leadership of the National Assembly, represented by Senate President Goodwill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, highlighted the unique emergence of Tinubu as President and Kashim Shettima as Vice President.
Both had previously served as members of the National Assembly, fostering expectations of a more cooperative relationship between the legislature and the executive to improve the lives of Nigerians.
The historic event saw the attendance of Vice President Kashim Shettima, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, SGF George Akume, and other dignitaries.
The two halls serving as temporary chambers were notably filled to capacity, with members, senators, and guests sharing the limited space.
