In the heart of Dubai, the 28th Conference of Parties , COP28, of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change has commenced with a resounding call for urgent collective action.

Over 160 world leaders, including Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, will address pressing issues surrounding climate change during this pivotal summit, set against the backdrop of what scientists have identified as the hottest year in human history.

The conference, from November 30 to December 12, holds the critical mission of securing decisive action on climate commitments. As the world grapples with the unfolding climate crisis, leaders are expected to deliver a clear message that deepens cooperation and prompts actions to reverse the looming climate impacts.

In a groundbreaking move, COP28 marks the culmination of the “global stocktake,” the first assessment of global progress on the 2015 Paris Agreement. Alarming findings reveal that the world is falling short of the target to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C by the century’s end.

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE’s COP28 president, underscored the urgency, emphasizing the need for immediate action to reduce carbon emissions. “Every country and every company will be held accountable, guided by the north star of keeping 1.5°C within reach,” he stated.

President Tinubu, representing Nigeria, is set to deliver a national statement during the World Leaders’ Summit on December 1 and 2, outlining the country’s stance on key issues such as renewable energy and climate financing. The conference will also on the “global south,” stressing the importance of collective efforts to achieve common goals.

The high-stake nature of COP28 is palpable, as leaders grapple with the outcomes of the global stocktake, revealing the urgency of the need to curb temperature rise. The spotlight is on climate financing, urging the replenishment of the Green Climate Fund, doubling financial resources for adaptation, and operationalizing the loss and damage fund.

Tinubu’s Diplomatic Strides: A Meeting with King Charles III

Amidst the intensity of COP28, President Tinubu has showcased significant diplomatic prowess. In a crucial meeting, Tinubu engaged with King Charles III of England to strategize for summit. Tinubu is not only delivering Nigeria’s climate stance but actively participating in sideline events to attract foreign direct investment for economic growth and revenue expansion.

His discussions extend beyond climate commitments, focusing on establishing bilateral partnerships in Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Article 6 Projects, Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes, Technology Transfer, Capacity Building, and Methane Mitigation initiatives. The outcomes of these discussions hold the potential for substantial positive impacts on Nigeria’s environmental and economic landscape.

In a prelude to the official opening of COP28, Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, met with Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Minister of Tolerance. The Emirati royal and politician committed to supporting Nigeria in addressing humanitarian crises and eradicating poverty, aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Nigerian team is awaiting President Tinubu’s turn to address the summit, which is expected to attract 70,000 participants.  Accompanied by government officials, including the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Environment, and Finance, Tinubu’s address is poised to shape the discourse surrounding climate change and its global implications.

As the world watches, President Tinubu’s leadership on the COP28 stage reflects Nigeria’s dedication to addressing climate issues and exploring opportunities for sustainable development. The unfolding events hold the promise of shaping international efforts to combat climate change, with far-reaching consequences for the global community.
