The future of indicted Republican George Santos in the U.S. House of Representatives hangs in the balance as lawmakers are set to vote on his potential expulsion over criminal corruption charges and allegations of misusing campaign funds.
Santos, entangled in controversy since his 2022 election, faces accusations of fabricating parts of his biography and is pleading not guilty to charges of campaign fund laundering and donor fraud.
Surviving a previous expulsion attempt, Santos could face a more challenging vote this time following a bipartisan investigation revealing extravagant spending of campaign money on spa treatments, luxury retail, and an online platform known for explicit content.
Santos stated on the House floor on Thursday,
“I have been convicted of no crimes.” “I was sent here by the people of New York’s Third (Congressional) District. “If they want me out, they’ll have to silence those people and take the tough vote.”
Santos’ problems began shortly after his election in November 2022, when media outlets reported that he had not attended New York University or worked at Goldman Sachs or Citigroup, as he had claimed during the campaign.
He also falsely claimed Jewish ancestry and told voters that his grandparents had fled the Nazis during WWII.
“Every day Mr. Santos is allowed to remain a member of Congress, my western New York neighbors are denied true representation.”
The two-thirds majority required for expulsion adds uncertainty to Santos’ political fate, with at least 77 Republicans and 213 Democrats needed to meet the threshold. His potential expulsion would make him the sixth member to be removed from the House, marking a rare occurrence in U.S. political history.
