In a decisive move to elevate the standards of sports administration, the Senate Committee on Sports has strategically appointed Bashir Hayatu Abubakar, a seasoned sports maestro, as its consultant.
The appointment, detailed in a letter personally penned by the Committee’s Chairman, Senator Suleiman Kawu Sumaila Ph.D., signals a new era in sports governance.
Abubakar, a native of Kano State and holder of a prestigious Masters of Art (MA) from the City University of London, emerges as a beacon of experience and competence in the dynamic world of sports administration.
The appointment is a testament to the Committee’s commitment to infuse expertise and ethical standards into the core of its operations.
In the eloquently-worded appointment letter, Senator Sumaila articulates the high expectations placed on Abubakar’s capable shoulders.
“With the wealth of experience garnered over the years at your disposal, we anticipate that you will bring this assignment to an enviable level of professionalism,” the Chairman notes, emphasizing the need for a higher level of ethical standards in the discharge of responsibilities.
The Chairman, acting on behalf of Committee members and the Secretariat, expressed eagerness to forge a robust working relationship with Abubakar. The symbiotic collaboration with the Clerk to the Committee is envisioned as a harmonious blend aimed at efficient and effective service delivery, ultimately fulfilling the Committee’s statutory obligations.
Abubakar’s illustrious career in sports administration includes noteworthy positions such as a management member of Katsina United, protocol officer to the Chairman of the NFA, and Chief Protocol Officer during the 1999 FIFA U-20 World Championship in Nigeria.
His diverse experience spans across continents, having served as a Protocol Officer at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa and a member of Nigeria’s delegation to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan.
Notably, Abubakar played a pivotal role as a member of Protocol, handling transportation, accommodation, venue, and accreditation during the 2019 FIFA U-17 Championship in Nigeria.
His multifaceted contributions extend beyond football to include active participation in the Kano State Basketball Association, board membership in the Kano State Football Association, and the role of vice-chairman at Wambai United FC in Kano.
Armed with this wealth of experience and a proven track record in sports administration, Abubakar is poised to hit the ground running in his new capacity as Consultant to the Senate Committee on Sports.
