In response to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s ,CBN, recent initiative to freeze bank accounts without Bank Verification Number ,BVN, or National Identity Number ,NIN, by April 2024.

The CEO of Arvofinance, Mr Ayotunde Bally, advocates for a simplified and more accessible BVN registration process, especially for people in rural areas.

Arvofinance, a fintech company specializing in providing online loans without collateral and guarantors, emphasizes the need for a more inclusive approach to BVN registration. Bally suggests that regulatory bodies collaborate with post offices or private organizations with extensive reach in rural areas, ensuring a broader and more accessible registration process.

Bally proposes exploring digital solutions to streamline the BVN registration process, making it convenient for individuals. Expressing concerns over potential financial inconvenience and disruptions, he highlights the current economic climate and high transportation costs, emphasizing the unfairness of compelling people to travel to cities for registration.

The CEO urges the government to prioritize citizens’ well-being over its interests and calls for measures to address challenges before implementing the account freeze directive. He notes the importance of considering the economic challenges faced by individuals.

On the other hand, Chika Nwosu, Managing Director of Palmpay, a mobile financial services platform, supports the CBN’s plan to freeze accounts without BVN or NIN. He sees the measure as enhancing overall security and protecting users’ data, fostering a secure financial ecosystem.

The CBN’s directive aims to improve financial inclusion and reduce the risk of financial fraud by requiring all bank account holders to have a BVN or NIN.

The unique identifiers serve to verify a person’s identity, making it more challenging for criminals to open fraudulent accounts and engage in illegal activities. As the deadline approaches, the fintech industry aligns with the directive to enhance the security of users’ wallets and provide seamless financial services.
