Sunderland Football Club has announced the departure of manager Tony Mowbray after a 15-month stint.
The decision comes with the team currently positioned ninth in the Championship with 27 points after 19 games. Mowbray leaves after a recent series of less favorable results, including two losses and a draw in the last three matches against teams in the bottom half of the table.
Mowbray took over as manager in August 2022, succeeding Alex Neil, and led the team to the Championship playoffs in his first season, reaching the semi-finals but falling short against Luton Town. The club’s recent performance, with only two wins in the last nine league games, contributed to the decision to part ways with the 60-year-old manager.
Sunderland Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but emphasized the club’s commitment to its ambition and strategy. The focus now shifts to identifying the right candidate for the managerial role, with first-team coach Mike Dodds temporarily in charge.
Sunderland is set to face arch-rivals Newcastle United in the FA Cup third round next month.
In a related move, Championship side Swansea City has also parted ways with manager Michael Duff. The club, currently without a win in the last five games and standing 18th in the table with 21 points, has appointed assistant head coach Alan Sheehan as the caretaker manager.
Swansea’s last victory dates back to October 28, securing a win against Blackburn Rovers.
