The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention ,NCDC, has dismissed reports of new coronavirus ,COVID-19, outbreaks in Benue state.
The agency stated that there are no new cases of the disease in the state.
Ifedayo Adetifa, Director General ,DG, of the NCDC, stated that the media report is a complete misinterpretation of a statement made by a World Health Organization ,WHO state surveillance officer on December 11 at the Civil Society Organizations ,CSOs, and Media Personnel Meeting organized by the Benue State Primary Healthcare Board in collaboration with the WHO.
In a statement issued on Thursday, December 14, Adetifa stated that the surveillance officer, while giving a presentation on the epidemiology of COVID-19 in Benue,said that “Benue state had recorded a total of 25 cases in the year 2023 with the last case recorded as of mid-April.
He stated that the information provided by the surveillance officer was based on the State Ministry of Health’s weekly situation report.
Since the announcement of the index case of COVID-19 in Nigeria, the DG reported a total of 6,013, 826 tests, 267,184 confirmed cases, and 3,155 deaths.
Furthermore, from October to December 2023, a total of 15,481 tests were conducted, with 75 confirmed cases confirmed cases in 25 states, he confirmed.
