Poland’s former interior minister, Mariusz Kamiski, has been sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday by the Warsaw District Court in the second instance.
The court made it known that the politician abused his position as head of the anti-corruption authority, CBA, during the conservative nationalist government led by the Law and Justice party ,PiS, at the time.
The former deputy head of the CBA, Maciej Wąsik, was also sentenced to two years in prison.
Both PiS politicians are banned from holding public office for five years and lose their seats in parliament.
Kamiński had already been sentenced to three years in prison in March 2015 for abuse of office at first instance.
The reason for the conviction was an affair uncovered in 2007, in which Kamiński’s office allegedly deliberately orchestrated a case of corruption in order to discredit the then minister of agriculture Andrzej Lepper. Kamiński appealed the conviction.
After the PiS government took office in the autumn of 2015, President Andrzej Duda pardoned Kamiński in a controversial decision, even though his appeal was still pending.
Therefore, the case was dropped shortly after and Kamiński was named interior minister.
The Supreme Court cancelled Kamiński’s pardon last June, which forced him to face trial again.
