The notice of impeachment that was previously sent to the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has been withdrawn by the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at the plenary the lawmakers announced their withdrawal and premised their aaction on the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.
Recall that on Monday night, President Tinubu resolved the political impasse in Rivers State.
In an eight-point resolution/directive signed on Monday following a meeting with influential politicians, such as former state governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, Tinubu instructed that all legal actions brought by Fubara and his associates concerning the political crisis in Rivers State be withdrawn immediately.
The president issued an order to immediately drop all impeachment proceedings against Fubara that had been started by the Rivers Assembly.
Additionally, Governor Fubara was instructed to reintroduce to the entire House the 2024 budget that he had previously shown to five members of the Rivers Assembly.
The governor and Wike, his predecessor, have clashed over who controls the political system in the state.
27 Rivers Assembly members defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress as a result of the feud.
