In a touching display of empathy, Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, came to the aid of a 50-year-old woman by name Eno Asuquo Essein who was found begging for help by the roadside in Calabar.
Eno is battling suspected chronic breast cancer and had been abandoned by her family.
The Minister, who was in Calabar for the Obong of Calabar event, noticed Eno sitting by the roadside in Ekorinum, near First Bank, seeking assistance for her medical condition.
Eno, a poor food vendor who had sold all her belongings to treat her fumigating breast cancer, was overwhelmed with emotion when the Minister stopped to pick her up.
Dr. Edu, known for her quiet humanitarian gestures, immediately arranged for Eno’s full rehabilitation, medical treatment, and overall humanitarian assistance. The Minister, moved by the plight of the ailing woman, ensured she was promptly taken to the hospital for immediate attention.
Eno, expressing her gratitude through tears, said, “God specially sent you to me during this season to save my life.
“You are proper and fit for the kind of humanitarian response Nigerians need, and I am today a bona fide beneficiary of this, I will shout for the people to hear.

“I thank Jesus, I thank you, and I thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who appointed you into this office. You are a humble and kind woman.”
Barrister James Ibor, a prominent human rights lawyer who witnessed the Minister’s intervention, commended Dr. Edu’s immediate and life-saving response, describing her as a “Humanitarian per Excellence.”
“I know Dr Betta and her humanitarian antecedents before now but what I saw her doing today was life-saving, timely and immediate response during the festive period, it’s commendable “.
Dr. Edu expressed hope for Eno’s recovery. “God will save Eno Asuquo Essein’s life from this deadly state I met her,” she said.
Investigations revealed that Eno had been battling suspected breast cancer for over three years without any medical attention, adversely affecting her physical appearance.
