Human Rights luminary Femi Falana, SAN, has unleashed scathing criticism against Dr Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, following allegations of her involvement in a staggering N585 million fraud.
The controversy erupted when a leaked memo brought to light instructions to transfer N585 million to a private account linked to Oniyelu Bridget, purportedly the Project Accountant for Grants for Vulnerable Groups. Dr Betta Edu defended the transaction, asserting that it passed through due process.
In an emphatic response on Sunday, January 7, Falana raised compelling questions about the transaction, pointing to potential breaches of public service rules and anti-corruption laws. The seasoned lawyer didn’t mince words as he demanded swift action from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to expedite the investigation into the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

“There can be no legal justification for the criminal diversion of the said sum of N585.18 million for disbursement to vulnerable people in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos, and Ogun States,” Falana declared, underlining the gravity of the allegations.
He highlighted that the Ministry had already collated individual bank accounts of vulnerable people, further deepening the concerns surrounding the disbursement.
