In a resounding victory for the recently launched Special Intervention Squad (SIS) led by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the squad has achieved outstanding results within a mere two weeks of its establishment.
The IGP-SIS proudly announces the successful arrest of 139 suspects, the rescue of 154 kidnapped victims, and the recovery of a significant cache of weapons, including arms and ammunition.
IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun expressed his satisfaction with the squad’s performance, stating, “The recent successes of the IGP-SIS underscore our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the Federal Capital Territory. The operations conducted are a testament to the dedication and effectiveness of our newly established intervention squad.”
Among the notable achievements is the interception of a group of individuals along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway, identified as major suppliers of arms and ammunition to bandits operating in Niger, Zamfara, and Kaduna States. IGP Egbetokun highlighted this accomplishment, stating, “Our operatives displayed exceptional skill and courage in intercepting a group responsible for arming criminal elements in neighboring states. This operation sends a clear message that we will not tolerate such activities within our jurisdiction.”
In a crucial engagement in the early hours of Friday, January 26, 2024, IGP-SIS operatives engaged armed bandits within the FCT-Kaduna axis, resulting in the neutralization of three criminals, including their gang leader, identified as Mai-Gemu (aka Gadoro). IGP Egbetokun commented on this operation, stating, “With this successful operation, we have effectively dismantled the gang and destroyed their camp. This is a significant blow to criminal activities in the region.”

The IGP-SIS has also successfully apprehended two major gun-running kingpins responsible for supplying locally fabricated arms and various types of ammunition to assailants operating in the North-Central region. IGP Egbetokun emphasized the significance of this achievement, saying, “The arrest of these gun-runners is a breakthrough in our efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons in the region. It showcases our determination to tackle criminal networks at their roots.”

In a separate operation in the Jikwoyi area of the FCT, IGP-SIS operatives arrested two kidnappers, recovering arms and ammunition during a gun battle that also led to the safe rescue of a kidnapped victim. IGP Egbetokun acknowledged the bravery of his team, stating, “Our operatives demonstrated exceptional courage in overpowering the kidnappers and rescuing the victim. This showcases our commitment to ensuring the safety of our citizens.”

Looking ahead, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun reiterated the expansion of the SIS beyond the FCT, stating, “The success achieved within the FCT is just the beginning. We are committed to launching the Special Intervention Squad in other states across the country to enhance security management nationally.”
