Scores of houses were affected as downpours and floods hit Lagos State on Tuesday morning.
Many residents of Nigeria’s economic nerve centre were also stranded in their residential apartments and their cars as major roads were submerged by flooding after months of heatwaves in the state.

In a statement, the South West Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said, “Given today’s excessive rainfall and Sunday’s similar event, Nigerians have been urged to notice the very strong signal of what may unfold on the on-set of 2024 rainfall.
“It is important to imbibe the culture of disaster risk reduction strategies in all spheres of our societal endeavours. We must begin to adhere to safety measures against flood disasters.”

Farinloye said no life was lost and no one was injured in Tuesday’s flood.
He said, “Preliminary assessment in some communities affected by the rainfall has shown that at Oke Ishagun about 23 houses have been evacuated, at Isale Aboru, 35 houses are affected, at Ikola Community 29 houses affected, at Olubodun Majiyagbe-Ajayi, 15 houses affected, Makinde Street, 12 houses impacted, Olokowo Street 16 houses affected and Adeola Street, 21 houses affected.”

He said NEMA has been working with appropriate ministries, departments and agencies to ameliorate observations and findings from the incident.
He appealed to Nigerians to clear their drainages while he also urged Community Development Associations to live up to their responsibility in coordinating the activities of neighbourhoods toward safer environments.
