In a bid to enhance mutual economic development, the Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its dedication to fortifying bilateral relations with the Republic of Türkiye, particularly focusing on key infrastructure projects.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, underscored this commitment during a meeting with the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Hidayet Bayraktar, accompanied by Deputy Ambassador Mr. Burak Hamarat, at his office.
Sen. Akume emphasized the longstanding history of cooperation between Nigeria and Türkiye, highlighting their shared membership in various multilateral organizations such as the Developing Eight Organization for Economic Cooperation, D-8, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the World Trade Organization. He noted that both countries advocate for inclusive governance systems to address global challenges effectively.
The discussion also revolved around the need to bolster collaboration on three Memoranda of Understanding and four agreements covering energy, hydrocarbons, mining, youth empowerment, and political consultations.
Regarding economic relations, Sen. Akume pointed out the necessity to strengthen the legal framework established in 2011 between Nigeria and Türkiye.

Ambassador H.E. Hidayet Bayraktar affirmed Türkiye’s commitment to enhancing the existing legal framework to deepen economic ties between the two nations for mutual benefit. He assured that Türkiye is dedicated to ensuring the implementation of agreements and MoUs with Nigeria under the current administration.
Sen. Akume expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s support in defense and security matters, particularly highlighting agreements facilitating military training and procurement of helicopters for the Nigerian Armed Forces in their fight against insurgency.
The meeting signals a concerted effort by both countries to foster stronger ties and collaboration, particularly in infrastructure development, indicating a positive trajectory for bilateral relations between Nigeria and Türkiye.
