Coach Mohammed Babaganaru, has decried his team’s poor funding, saying it could affect their chances of avoiding relegation if not addressed.
Babaganaru shared these thoughts on Sunday during a post-match conference in Gombe, following his team’s important victory against Sporting Lagos in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL.
“We are facing significant financial challenges, and we appeal to Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State to assist us,” he expressed. We believe that with financial support, we can achieve great things. We have talented players, as seen in our recent recruitment efforts.”
Babaganaru emphasized the crucial role of adequate funding, highlighting its impact on the team’s performance in the NPFL. He stressed that lack of funds was affecting his players mentally and could jeopardize their NPFL status for the next season. He emphasized the urgency of increased financial backing to uplift the team’s spirits and enhance their competitiveness in the league.
“We faced numerous challenges, especially financial ones, during the first round of matches. It’s crucial for the government to step in and support this club.”
The Match Day 21 fixture held at the Pantami Township Stadium ended in a 2-0 victory for Gombe United, who are currently fighting relegation. Reflecting on the match, Babaganaru expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, praising their character and determination that secured the win.

Sporting Lagos coach Paul Offor described the match as tough, attributing it partly to the hot weather and the home team’s tactics.
Despite the loss, Offor emphasized the importance of focusing on the next game against Akwa United. He urged his team not to let the result affect their momentum and to regroup for the upcoming match.
Gombe United’s goals were scored by Luke Balogun and Yusuf Taiye in the 45th and 74th minutes, respectively.
