Samuel Eto’o, the President of the Cameroon Football Federation,  Fecafoot, has announced the departure of Rigobert Song, the head coach of Cameroon national team.

Cameroon’s national football team, led by coach Song, faced disappointment in the Africa Cup of Nations, exiting in the last 16 against Nigeria, who eventually became runners-up.

Eto’o, speaking on behalf of the executive committee, expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance under Song’s leadership. As a result, the federation was unwilling to extend his contract.

Song is former Cameroonian International before assuming the role of  manager of the Cameroon national team.

He was renowned for his defensive prowess at the centre-back, though he was also capable of playing as a right-back. Song boasts an impressive international career, having participated in eight Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, five of which he captained, excluding South Africa 1996, Burkina Faso 1998, and Angola 2010.

He holds the record for the most consecutive games played in the tournament, totaling 35 first-team appearances. Song secured two CAF Africa Cup of Nations titles in 2000 and 2002.

In 2009, Song was replaced as Cameroon’s captain by new coach Paul Le Guen, who appointed Samuel Eto’o as the new skipper. This decision sparked concerns since Song had been a mainstay in the team for over eleven years and had never been benched during that time.

Song, who previously played alongside Eto’o for Cameroon, took over as head coach in February 2022. Despite guiding the team to a dramatic World Cup qualification victory over Algeria, their overall performance fell short of expectations.
