Umar Abdullahi, the coach of Akwa United, has pledged to prevent losing away matches as part of the team’s strategy to avoid relegation in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL.
“We’ve been struggling to secure points away from home, and it has affected our position in the league table, putting us in the relegation zone. We’ve recognized the danger of losing away matches, so we’ve worked hard to address it. The draw against Gombe United is a positive step, and we’ll use it as a foundation to improve our performance and aim for a better position in the league.”
“We must stop losing points at home, but our focus should be on consistently earning points on the road, and we’ve started doing that with this match. Congratulations to the team because we’ve struggled away from home, rarely picking up points. This match marks a turning point for us in that regard. We understand the precarious position of the team, and the only way to avoid relegation is by accumulating points. While our aim was to secure all three points, getting one point is still valuable, and we are grateful for it.”

Abdullahi expressed confidence that Plateau United should prepare for a surprise in their upcoming match, as his team is now motivated to secure points on the road. However, the absence of Gombe United’s Chief Coach, Alhaji Kwairanga, and the hasty departure of Coach Adewale Moses from the pitch due to the hostility of the home fans marked notable incidents during the match.
David Nnaji scored for Gombe United in the 52nd minute, while Suleiman Sani equalized for Akwa United in the 61st minute.
