The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has launched a mobile app allowing Nigerians to update their National Identification Number, NIN, data.

This new app enables users to make corrections to their name, date of birth, and phone numbers on their NIN profile. Previously, Nigerians faced challenges modifying their NIN data, often having to visit NIMC offices across the country.

In 2021, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, mandated all mobile networks to link phone numbers to National Identification Numbers. Additionally, the NCC extended the requirement to link NINs to bank accounts, with non-compliant individuals facing potential account suspensions.

Recently, the Director-General of the Commission, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, discussed a new self-help platform aimed at simplifying the registration process. This platform allows Nigerians to register for NINs from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need to visit NIMC offices or agents.

Coker-Odusote highlighted that approximately 104 million people have already been registered for NINs, showcasing significant progress by the NIMC. The goal is to streamline the registration process, reduce long queues, and eliminate extortion, ensuring a seamless experience for obtaining NINs.
