Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Ltd, has emphasized the crucial need to close Nigeria’s energy access gap to drive economic prosperity.

Kyari disclosed this while speaking at the 2024 Society of Petroleum Engineers Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum in Abuja,  highlighting NNPC Ltd’s commitment to developing vital infrastructure for oil and gas delivery, with a focus on boosting prosperity for Nigerians.

He revealed the company’s dedication to investing in gas infrastructure nationwide, with a target of supplying at least 8 billion cubic meters domestically. Stressing that this commitment extends beyond legal obligations, Kyari emphasized its role in ensuring energy security beyond mere fuel supply.

The NNPC CEO outlined various infrastructural projects aimed at bridging the energy access gap, including the Obiafu/Obrikom/Oben  and Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano pipelines, which are set to bolster the nation’s gas supply network.

Internationally, Kyari highlighted NNPC Ltd’s efforts to expand gas supply to global markets, including initiatives like the NLNG Train 7 project, with plans underway for Train 8 and other floating LNG ventures.

Kyari called for support in harnessing Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for economic growth, stressing the importance of addressing access gaps in electricity and clean cooking fuel. He also assured stakeholders of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s backing for the gas revolution.

Also, Engr. Salahuddeen Tahir, Chairperson of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Nigeria Council, emphasized energy’s pivotal role in modern society. Tahir advocated for a diversified and sustainable energy transportation system to combat climate change and bolster energy security.

The 24th SPE Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum, initiated in 1991, aims to shape Nigeria’s oil and gas industry policies, commemorating the first commercial oil discovery in the country at Oloibiri, Bayelsa State, in 1956.
