Tension escalates in Labour Party as NLC pushes hard for Abure’s removal

Tension within the Labour Party, LP, escalates as a leadership crisis unfolds, with the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, intensifying efforts to remove Julius Abure as National Chairman, showing no regard to Peter Obi.

NLC spokesperson Benson Upah, in a statement, denounced Abure’s re-election at a contentious convention as “illegitimate” and outrightly rejected his authority.

“Our position is clear. Abure remains unknown to us. As far as we know, he does not exist,” Upah affirmed.

This latest trend comes amidst calls for both Abure and NLC President Joe Ajaero to resign from dissatisfied retired workers under the Lagos Assembly of Labour Veterans and Trade Unionists.

Peter Obi, the LP’s presidential candidate, seems to be in disagreement with the party leadership. Obi who voiced his frustration during an X, formerly Twitter Space session, cited dissatisfaction with the insufficient consultation preceding the convention.

He was notably absent from the event that re-elected Abure.

Obi’s position has sparked speculation about his potential exploration of alternative platforms, despite assurances of a presidential ticket from the LP for the 2027 elections.

Nevertheless, Upah sought to diminish such speculation, affirming that Obi retains the “right of choice,” and the NLC would not obstruct his decision to depart, stating, “we can’t stand in his way.”

While acknowledging Obi’s value as an “asset,” Upah emphasized the NLC’s priority is ousting Abure.

The public discord highlights concerns regarding the party’s cohesion and its capacity to execute a successful presidential campaign.
