The Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association, UNIFEMGA, has called on Federal Government to put more bite into its anti-corruption fight.

Mr Mohammed Buhari, the National President, UNIFEMGA, stated this at a news conference in OAU, Ile-Ife, at the end of the 2024 National Reunion Conference

Buhari said that corruption had eaten deep into the fabric of the nation, resulting in non accountability and transparency in most government business.

He charged the government to ensure that those found culpable of corruption, were made to face the wrath of the law.

The President stated that the association had given scholarships and grants to 118 OAU undergraduate and postgraduate students at the cost of N11.5 million as part of its welfare programmes.

He added that the association had disbursed over N60 million to 1,168 students of the institution.

“The association bemoans the continued marginalisation of South-West Muslims by denying them access to political offices, appointment to government establishments including university appointments using various weapons of oppression and intimidation.

“Since Nigeria is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic society, efforts should be geared towards upholding the letter and spirit of the principle of Federal Character without sacrificing merit in all governmental affairs and appointments.

“The Renewed Hope agenda of the President Bola Tinubu administration is supposed to reset Nigeria’s economic advancement and ease the burden of hardship on the citizenry.

“But thus far, the selfish activities of saboteurs and insensitivity of our leaders made the last one year a tough one for everybody,” he said.

He admonished all elected and appointed leaders to be responsive to the needs and aspirations of the citizenry, by embracing good governance, fairness and justice.

“All the three tiers of government should ensure the safety of lives and property of all the citizens, for when there is national security development and economic growth can take place,” he said.

Buhari called on the private sector to partner with the government in the education sector, so as to address all the infrastructure deficit in all institutions of learning.

He enjoined the federal government to give employment opportunities to teeming unemployed Nigerian youths who were being used as instruments of violence by some selfish and unpatriotic individuals.

Buhari urged all Nigerians to live in peace and harmony, learn to tolerate one another, be fair to all and remember that injustice breeds uprising and violent acts.

The Association also held its Annual General Meeting, AGM, where activities of the past one year were reviewed, and a new set of National Executive Council led by Alhaji Mohammed Buhari was appointed following the expiration of the tenure of the former National Executive Council.
