The cholera outbreak in Lagos State continues to escalate, with the State Ministry of Health reporting five deaths and 60 hospitalizations in the past 48 hours.

Authorities are ramping up efforts to contain the spread of the disease and provide medical care to the affected individuals.

A statement released by the ministry disclosed that the affected places include Eti Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe, urging residents to take health precautions, even as the government is investigating a possible water contamination source in the Lekki Victoria Island axis.

“The Lagos State Government is warning citizens about a potential cholera outbreak in the state. There has been an increase in reported cases of severe gastroenteritis in the past 48 hours, with 60 hospitalizations and 5 deaths, ” read the statement.

Cholera is a highly contagious and life-threatening disease that spreads through contaminated food and water and poor sanitation.

Symptoms include severe diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, muscle cramps, fever, and collapse.

Treatment options include rehydration with Oral Rehydration Salts for mild to moderate dehydration and intravenous fluids for severe dehydration.

Prevention

To prevent cholera, citizens are advised to:

Ensure safe drinking water by boiling, chlorinating, or using bottled water
Avoid ice products made from untreated water
Maintain proper sanitation and hygiene practices
Wash hands regularly with soap and clean water
Follow food safety guidelines

The ministry, while urging citizens to take precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease, added that suspected cases can be promptly reported through emergency hotlines: 08023169485, 08137412348, or helplines 767 or 112.
