Defying Government plea and warnings, some youths have taken to the streets of Niger state to protest the pervasive economic hardship and spiraling inflation in Nigeria.

The protest was reportedly billed to commence on August 1 nationwide.

However, on Monday, some youths in Niger trooped out with placards bearing inscriptions like ‘Fuel subsidy must be back’, ‘Enough is enough’, ‘Stop anti-masses policies’, ‘We are not slaves in our country’, ‘Hardship is unbearable’.

The protesters are currently marching through the Abuja-Kaduna expressway in Suleja LGA of Niger state, while chanting anti government slogans.

Last week, Governor Mohammed Bago had wooed residents of Niger with welfare packages to prevent the protest.

He had announced a N20,000 wage allowance for state and local government civil servants, ordered the immediate release of 50,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains to be sold at subsidized rates to mitigate the current economic hardship.

Other State governors and President Bola Tinubu have repeatedly appealed to youths to shelve the August 1-10 demonstrations.

Law enforcement agencies have also warned that the protests could be hijacked by hoodlums and “unscrupulous agents”.
