The Super Eagles ramp up their Uyo training, with 20 players already in camp, ahead of Saturday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifier against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic.

Captain William Ekong, who arrived early on Monday, led the team, which included defenders Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi, Olisa Ndah, and forwards Ademola Lookman and Taiwo Awoniyi. Midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and goalkeeper Amas Obasogie were also among the early arrivals, alongside Wilfred Ndidi.

Later on Monday evening, striker Victor Boniface and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali joined the camp. Tuesday morning saw the arrival of defender Calvin Bassey, midfielders Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka, while Benjamin Tanimu (who replaced Bright Osayi-Samuel), Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi, Moses Simon, and Samuel Chukwueze also checked in.

As the team bus prepared to depart for training on Tuesday evening, defender Bruno Onyemaechi and midfielder Raphael Onyedika reported for duty. Three players are still being awaited in camp. Forward Kelechi Iheanacho is expected to arrive on Wednesday, while goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and star forward Victor Osimhen are set to join the squad on Thursday.

After Saturday’s match against Benin, the Super Eagles will head to Kigali on Sunday to face the Amavubi of Rwanda in their ‘Matchday 2’ clash on Tuesday.

Recall that in AFCON 2023, host nation Ivory Coast won the tournament for their third title. They beat Nigeria 2–1 in the final, having also beaten defending champions Senegal in the round of 16 in a penalty shootout after the allocated playing time had ended in a 1–1 draw.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, also referred to as AFCON 2025 or CAN 2025, is scheduled to be the 35th edition of the biennial African football tournament organised by the Confederation of African Football. It will be hosted by Morocco for the second time and the first since 1988. Morocco was originally scheduled to host the 2015 edition, but withdrew due to fears stemming from the Western African Ebola virus epidemic.
