Determined to foster sustainable development and promote gender equality, the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN, is establishing two new centres: the Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy and the Centre for Gender Studies.
Rising from its 301st meeting, the university Senate gave nod to the Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy to harness ocean resources sustainably, contributing to economic growth while preserving marine ecosystems.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Wahab Egbewole highlighted the university’s proactive engagement with Prof Gunter Pauli, a global advocate for the blue economy, to ensure that UNILORIN becomes a hub for innovative research and training in this emerging field.
Additionally, the Centre for Gender Studies is set to challenge traditional gender norms and promote inclusivity within academic curricula. It aims to equip students with the tools necessary to advocate for women’s rights and social justice, aligning with global agendas for gender equality, including the Beijing Declaration.
These initiatives underscore UNILORIN’s commitment to addressing critical contemporary issues and enhancing its role as a leader in higher education in Nigeria.
