Republican candidate Donald Trump has voiced his confusion and offense over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s seemingly sarcastic endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris for the 2024 US presidential election.
Putin’s remarks, which highlighted Harris’s “infectious laugh” and suggested she might avoid imposing further sanctions on Russia, have sparked a mix of reactions from Trump and US officials.
Trump, addressing his supporters, questioned the sincerity of Putin’s comments, stating, “I don’t know if I’m insulted or if he did me a favor.” He speculated that Putin’s endorsement might have been made “with a smile,” reflecting the Russian leader’s strategic nature.
Putin’s comments came during an economic forum in Russia, where he joked that Harris’s expressive laughter indicated she was doing well and might not impose more sanctions on Russia, contrasting her with Trump, who he claimed had enacted more restrictions than any previous president.

Despite his grievances, Trump maintained that he was the toughest on Russia, asserting that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine would not have happened under his administration. He vowed to resolve the war quickly if re-elected, emphasizing his prior relationship with Putin and his approach to foreign policy.
The endorsement has also drawn a swift rebuke from US officials, with National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby urging Putin to stop interfering in US elections.
The incident has further escalated tensions in the lead-up to the election, with concerns over foreign interference remaining a significant issue.
