The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has disclosed that 20 candidates vying for positions in the upcoming local government elections have tested positive for drug use.
This was disclosed by Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics and Public Relations Officer of the NDLEA in Kano State, on Wednesday. The agency made the clarification in response to reports circulating about the drug integrity tests conducted on political aspirants.
While confirming the number, Maigatari emphasized that the 20 candidates who tested positive include individuals contesting both chairmanship and councilorship positions, representing various political parties. He clarified that the figure is not specific to any particular office or political affiliation, as the candidates present themselves individually for drug tests without specifying the position they are seeking.

“The 20 candidates who tested positive include both those running for chairmanship and councilorship positions, and they belong to various political parties.
“Therefore, the number is not limited to any specific seat or political affiliation,” Maigatari explained, adding that the NDLEA does not distinguish between aspirants for chairmanship or councilorship positions during the drug screening process.
The agency urged the public to await the final release of the drug test results, assuring transparency and accuracy in the process.
“We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation as we ensure integrity in the elections,” Maigatari concluded.
