Manchester City is facing a significant challenge following the injury of key midfielder Rodri, who may be sidelined for an extended period due to a suspected anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The Spanish international suffered the injury during a dramatic 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday, just 21 minutes into the match.
His absence is set to leave a considerable void in a City squad that has relied heavily on his contributions over recent seasons.
Manager Pep Guardiola confirmed the severity of Rodri’s situation in a post-match press conference after City’s Carabao Cup victory against Watford. “We still lack a definitive diagnosis, but it appears he will be out for a long time,” Guardiola stated.
He added that while some medical assessments suggest the injury might not be as severe as initially feared, the team is awaiting further evaluations from specialists in Barcelona, where Rodri traveled for additional tests.
Rodri’s injury occurred in an innocuous clash with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey during a corner kick. After receiving treatment on the pitch, he was unable to continue and was replaced by Mateo Kovacic.
This incident marks a significant setback for City, especially considering Rodri’s pivotal role in their recent successes, including winning four consecutive Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

Guardiola emphasized the impact of losing such a crucial player, referring to Rodri as “irreplaceable.” He acknowledged the difficulty of adapting to Rodri’s absence but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to find solutions. “When one player is irreplaceable, the team must discover a way to cope,” he remarked.
Guardiola also highlighted that City has previously managed without key players like Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne for extended periods, suggesting that they can adapt again.
The loss of Rodri could have far-reaching implications for City’s aspirations this season.
His presence has been instrumental in maintaining control in midfield, and without him, Guardiola will need to rely on other players such as Kovacic, Bernardo Silva, and potentially De Bruyne who is also currently dealing with his own injury issues to fill the gap.
Rodri’s contributions extend beyond his defensive prowess; he was recently named the best player at Euro 2024 and has been integral to City’s dominance in English football.
Since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2019, he has made over 260 appearances and helped secure 11 major trophies for the club.
As Manchester City prepares for upcoming fixtures without their star midfielder, Guardiola remains hopeful yet realistic about the challenges ahead. “We don’t want this, but we will still have a good season,” he said. “I trust a lot in my players; I have a duty to find a solution.”
The coming weeks will be crucial as City navigates this difficult period while aiming to maintain their status as one of Europe’s elite football clubs.
