Civil servants under the Federal Government payroll will start receiving the new minimum wage payment from Thursday, the 26th of September.
The Spokesperson of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa disclosed this in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST on Thursday. He assured that workers will begin to get alert of their new minimum wage salary payment starting from Thursday.
However, Mokwa did not state if the minimum wage would be paid alongside its arrears.
He said: “Federal Government civil servants will start getting the new minimum wage from today(Thursday) this September 2024. What I can tell you is that the minimum wage salary payment is today I am not sure of the arrears.”

His comment comes after the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta, on Tuesday confirmed that the government has approved the upward review of consolidated public service salary structure, CONPSS in line with the minimum wage(Amendment) Act, 2024.
However, he stated that the payment of the new minimum wage will commence from July 2024.
The commission stated that this was because the date in question was when the President approved the bill after the National Assembly passed it.
The development is contrary to an earlier statement by the Minister of State for Labour, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, that the payment would commence on May 1, 2024.
It also means that the government would only pay an arrears of two months only if it begins payment by the end of October.
“The commission wishes to clarify that the effective date for the commencement of the National Minimum Wage is the 29th of July, 2024 as that was the day Mr President assented to the act after the bill was forwarded to him by the National Assembly,” he said.
He added that any federal public service, whether self-funded or treasury funded that had not received a circular to this effect, specifically from the NSIWC, should contact it for further directives.
