Authorities in Afghanistan have arrested several suspects connected to a brutal attack on foreign tourists in the historically rich Bamiyan province. The attack, which occurred on May 17, resulted in the deaths of three Spanish nationals and three Afghans, marking a significant escalation in violence against tourists since the Taliban regained control of the country in 2021.
The assault took place in a bustling market area where a group of tourists was shopping. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene as gunmen opened fire on the group, which included travelers from various countries. The Islamic State ,IS, later claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it was part of a broader directive to target citizens of coalition countries. This assertion has raised concerns about the resurgence of extremist violence in a region that had seen a relative decline in such incidents since the Taliban’s takeover.
Following the attack, Taliban officials announced the arrest of seven individuals believed to be involved. Abdul Matin Qani, spokesman for the Taliban-led Interior Ministry, stated that security forces were actively pursuing leads to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice. “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan strongly condemns this incident and assures that all criminals will be found and punished,” Qani declared.

The victims included a mother and daughter from Catalonia, along with a 63-year-old engineer, all of whom were reportedly on holiday exploring Afghanistan’s cultural heritage. An 82-year-old Spanish retiree was also seriously injured and is currently receiving medical treatment in Kabul. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares expressed outrage over the attack and emphasized his government’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
This incident marks the first deadly assault on foreign tourists since the Taliban returned to power, raising alarms about the safety of international visitors in Afghanistan. Despite improvements in security conditions that have led to an increase in tourism over 5,000 foreign visitors reportedly traveled to Afghanistan in 2023 this attack highlights ongoing risks posed by extremist groups like IS.
Bamiyan province is particularly significant due to its historical and cultural sites, including ancient Buddhist monuments. However, it is also home to many members of the Hazara community, who have been frequently targeted by IS due to their Shiite beliefs.
International reactions have been swift, with various countries condemning the violence and expressing condolences to the families affected. The United States and European Union officials have voiced their concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in Afghanistan, reiterating travel advisories against visiting the country due to potential risks of kidnappings and attacks.
As investigations continue and security measures are reassessed, this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the fragile security landscape in Afghanistan and the persistent threat posed by extremist factions.
