The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara has raised a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the violence against several Local Government Council Headquarters in the state after Saturday’s elections.

The incidents, which involved arson, killings, and widespread destruction of property, occurred on or about Monday, October 7, 2024. This move comes as part of the government’s effort to bring justice and accountability to the perpetrators of the unrest.

In a statement, Dr. Tammy Wenike Danagogo, Secretary to the Rivers State Government Tuesday, the inquiry was set up under Section 2(1) of the Commissions of Inquiry Law, Cap 30, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.

The statement outlined the severity of the violence, which led to significant damage and loss of lives in the affected areas. Governor Fubara emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible for the violence are brought to justice and that peace is restored across the state.

The Commission is mandated to  investigate the circumstances that led to the violence, identifying the individuals or groups responsible, and providing recommendations on how to prevent future occurrences.

It is expected to deliver a comprehensive report to the state government, which will guide further legal and security actions.

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry was sworn in Tuesday at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt.
