Kenyan lawmakers have initiated a significant impeachment process against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, citing allegations of abuse of office and corruption.
This development has raised many questions about the political landscape in the country. Gachagua, a 59-year-old politician known for his outspoken nature and fiery rhetoric, has reportedly clashed with President William Ruto over the past few months.
Once a key ally in securing votes from the influential Kikuyu tribe during the 2022 elections, Gachagua’s relationship with Ruto has soured, particularly in light of recent anti-government protests. Accusations have surfaced suggesting Gachagua sided with the protesters, and during a televised address, he even criticized security forces for their role in the unrest.
While the primary charges against Gachagua relate to corruption, analysts suggest that the underlying tension stems from personality clashes and Gachagua’s confrontational style. Declan Galvin, managing director of Exigent Risk Advisory, noted that Ruto might perceive Gachagua’s actions as undermining his administration, framing the impeachment as a strategic display of control in the face of political uncertainty.
Interestingly, Ruto has remained silent regarding the impeachment motion, which originated from a member of his ruling coalition. Gachagua has acknowledged that the motion would likely not have proceeded without Ruto’s tacit approval.

Despite past charges involving unexplained wealth amounting to over 7.3 billion Kenyan shillings ($57 million) being dropped upon taking office, Gachagua is now accused of amassing an additional 5.2 billion shillings ($40 million) in his two years as deputy president, raising questions about the source of his wealth given his reported annual salary of $93,000. He attributes his financial success to family business interests in real estate, hospitality, and construction.
In a controversial statement, Gachagua suggested that coalition supporters should have preferential access to government jobs and development projects, sparking backlash within Ruto’s coalition.
The impeachment saga has captivated local media, dominating discussions in public spaces and serving as a focal point in the nation’s political narrative. However, some Kenyans view the timing of this political drama as a diversion from pressing issues, including public dissatisfaction over the handling of protesters, a controversial takeover bid for Nairobi’s international airport, and the rocky implementation of a new health insurance system.
