In a landmark event for Nigeria’s Muslim community, Prof. Illiyasu Usman delivered his first khutbah (sermon) during the Jumm’at prayer today at the Abuja National Mosque, marking a significant step in his role as a spiritual leader.
His appointment has been lauded as a win for inclusivity, especially by the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria, SEMON, which celebrated his contributions to Islamic scholarship and leadership.
SEMON, in a congratulatory message, praised Prof. Usman, stating: “This role is a recognition of your unwavering commitment to Islamic scholarship and leadership, and a divine responsibility to guide the Ummah.” They expressed optimism that his leadership would inspire unity within both the Igbo Muslim community and the broader Muslim population in Nigeria.
Prof. Usman now joins fellow esteemed Imams, Prof. Ibrahim Makari and Prof. Muhammad Kabir, in leading Juma’ah and daily prayers at the mosque. The fourth Imam, Sheikh Ahmad Onilewura, from Southwest Nigeria, is currently on medical leave, making Prof. Usman’s leadership even more significant.

The Abuja National Mosque was filled with excitement and anticipation as Muslims from various regions gathered for this historic moment. Many viewed his khutbah as not only a reflection of his scholarly qualifications but also a symbol of Nigeria’s rich cultural and religious diversity.
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, under the leadership of President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has also highlighted the importance of this inclusive approach to Islamic leadership in the country.
