President Bola Tinubu officially swore in Dr. Abdullahi Usman Bello as the new Chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau, on Wednesday.

The ceremony took place just before the Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Most council members were present, although a few, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, were attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa. Also not at the meeting were the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo; Power, Adebayo Adelabu; Environment, Professor Joseph Utsev; and the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

After his swearing-in, Bello shared his commitment to combatting corruption as the head of Nigeria’s premier anti-corruption agency. He stressed the critical need for integrity and accountability among public officials and vowed to uphold the Bureau’s mission.

Bello acknowledged the global nature of corruption but expressed confidence that with the right systems in place, Nigeria could effectively address this issue. He thanked President Tinubu for the appointment and promised to dedicate himself to fulfilling the Bureau’s mandate, ensuring public servants operate with integrity and avoid conflicts of interest.

“I want to thank Mr. President for appointing me to this position. Really happy, and I want to assure Mr. President and the people of Nigeria, I will do my best to make sure that I deal with this huge task that is ahead of me.

“Like you mentioned, the Code of Conduct Bureau is the foremost anti-corruption agency, the first anti-corruption agency in Nigeria and I intend to deliver on the mandates of the Bureau. It’s all about making sure that people, public servants, behave with integrity, avoid corruption, no conflict of interests.

“So that is the aim of it; integrity, accountability, those are the duties that I need to deliver on. I promise Nigerians that Insha Allah, I’m going to do my best to make sure that I deliver on the mandate of the Bureau,” Bello said.

In response to questions about challenges in enforcing conduct, Bello highlighted that corruption is a universal issue but stressed the importance of having strong systems to mitigate it. He reassured Nigerians that with the appropriate mechanisms and institutions, they could significantly tackle corruption within the country.
