In a dramatic incident on Tuesday morning, a commercial bus driver in Lagos reportedly set himself, his vehicle, and a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, officer on fire while attempting to avoid arrest over a traffic violation.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, explained that the driver of the Volkswagen T4 bus, identified by license plate LSD 355 CK, became aggressive when intercepted by LASTMA officers in the Cele inward Mile-2 area. The driver and his conductor allegedly poured petrol on the LASTMA personnel before igniting the fuel, leading to severe injuries for one officer who was rushed to the hospital with serious burns.

Bakare-Oki condemned the incident, emphasizing LASTMA’s dedication to road safety and order under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. He urged drivers to follow traffic regulations and respect LASTMA officials, noting that the authority would take decisive action against acts of violence and aggression toward its officers.
The incident has sparked concerns over escalating tensions between road users and traffic officials, with calls for better measures to ensure both enforcement and compliance without endangering lives.
