Gunmen kidnapped Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, the parish priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Obollo, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, Imo State, on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred as he was driving through the Aliyi community in Obollo while returning to his parish after an assignment.

Ordained by the Catholic Diocese of Okigwe on September 27, 2014, Fr. Azubuike has served in the Obollo parish for several years. Following the abduction, the Catholic Diocese of Okigwe issued a statement urging the faithful to pray fervently for the priest’s immediate and safe return.

“I am directed to inform you that one of our priests, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, was kidnapped on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, around 6 p.m. in the Aliyi community. We ask for your prayers and solidarity for his safe return,” stated Very Rev. Fr. Princewill Iwuanyanwu, Chancellor of the diocese.

David Ajaero, the local councillor for Obollo Ward, confirmed the abduction and shared that the community was united in prayer for the priest’s release, describing Fr. Azubuike as a compassionate and respected leader.

The news of Father Azubuike’s kidnapping has prompted an outpouring of support from the community. Many residents have taken to social media platforms to express their concern and to advocate for his immediate release. The hashtag #FreeFatherAzubuike has gained traction as community members unite in their calls for action against such criminal activities.

Meanwhile, Imo State Police spokesperson Henry Okoye assured the public that the Commissioner of Police had launched an investigative team dedicated to securing Fr. Azubuike’s rescue and apprehending the kidnappers.

This incident highlights a growing trend of insecurity in Imo State, where kidnappings have become increasingly common. Clergy members are particularly vulnerable targets, leading to heightened fears among religious communities regarding their safety. Calls for increased security measures have intensified as residents demand protection from these violent acts.

As this situation develops, it remains critical for community members and law enforcement to work together in addressing the root causes of violence and insecurity in the region. The hope is that through prayer and action, Father Azubuike will be safely returned to his parish and that measures will be put in place to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
