The National Onion Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria, NOPPMAN, has declared a state of emergency in the nation’s onion industry, citing multiple challenges threatening its survival.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, NOPPMAN President Isa Aliyu urged both the government and other stakeholders to come together to find urgent solutions to the growing crisis.
Aliyu highlighted several pressing issues facing the sector, including soaring costs of onion seedlings, rising inflation, post-harvest losses, and the adverse effects of climate change. He explained that the current economic climate has driven up the cost of key farming inputs like fertilizer, pesticides, and fuel, making it increasingly difficult for farmers to sustain their operations.
“Farmers are struggling to break even due to the high costs of essential resources,” Aliyu said, adding that climate change, characterized by extended rainfall patterns and unpredictable weather conditions, has further complicated farming cycles. “Excessive rainfall has led to crop diseases and poor harvests, making it difficult for farmers to plan and effectively harvest their crops.”

In light of these challenges, Aliyu called for immediate government intervention, including subsidies for onion seedlings and other essential inputs to ease the financial burden on farmers. He also urged the provision of modern storage facilities to address the issue of post-harvest losses and the establishment of efficient transportation systems to reduce spoilage during transit.
Furthermore, Aliyu emphasized the need for better access to financial support, such as low-interest loans, and appealed to agricultural research institutions to assist in training farmers on climate-smart practices to adapt to changing weather conditions.
Aliyu’s plea comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s onion industry, as stakeholders look to secure the future of the sector amidst growing economic and environmental challenges. The call for urgent action underscores the importance of collaboration between the government, private sector, and agricultural bodies to ensure the resilience and sustainability of onion farming in Nigeria.
