Liam Payne, the former One Direction star, consumed a combination of cocaine, alcohol, and prescription antidepressants before falling to his death from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires last month, Argentine prosecutors disclosed.
The toxicology report, shared with his family, confirmed that Payne had traces of multiple substances in his system in the hours leading up to his death. The drugs included alcohol, cocaine, and an antidepressant, with traces found from at least 72 hours before his fatal fall.
Payne, 31, was discovered dead on October 16 after falling from the third-floor balcony of his room at the CasaSur Hotel in Buenos Aires. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as “multiple traumas” and “internal and external hemorrhaging” from the fall.
In the wake of his tragic death, three individuals have been charged with supplying him with drugs. One of them, who had been with Payne during his stay in Buenos Aires, is also charged with abandoning him while he was in a vulnerable state. Another hotel worker has been accused of providing Payne with cocaine twice during his stay.

The prosecution ruled out suicide or foul play, stating that Payne’s injuries were consistent with a fall and that he was likely either unconscious or in a severely impaired state at the time of the incident. Hotel staff had called emergency services after reporting that Payne was “overwhelmed by drugs and alcohol” and causing damage to his room.
Payne’s death has sparked conversations about the mental health pressures faced by young stars in the music industry. He had openly discussed his struggles with substance abuse and the challenges of growing up in the public eye after finding fame as part of One Direction.
The tragic loss has led to an outpouring of grief, with tributes from his family, fans, and former bandmates. Payne, who is survived by his son Bear, had enjoyed a successful solo career after One Direction’s hiatus in 2016, but in recent years his career had slowed.
His body was repatriated to the UK the day after the toxicology report was released. The investigation continues as the world mourns the loss of a pop icon.
