Gunmen enforcing the Monday sit-at-home order in Anambra State have killed four and critically injured the President General of Abatete Vigilance Service, Mr. Chimame Ezigbo.

The attacks occurred on Monday morning between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. in the communities of Abatete and Ukpo, causing widespread panic and forcing residents back into their homes.

Three members of the Abatete Vigilante Service accompanying Mr. Ezigbo were shot dead on the spot. Mr. Ezigbo himself was shot in the head and remains in critical condition, according to an eyewitness.

“We are praying for the recovery of our PG,” the witness shared. “He’s a man dedicated to maintaining peace in Abatete, and the community is in shock over this targeted attack.”

A separate incident at Ukpo Junction in Dunukofia Local Government Area saw a motorcycle rider, reportedly also a vigilante, killed as gunmen opened fire indiscriminately.

Law enforcement sources have confirmed ongoing investigations into both attacks, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend the assailants. These violent incidents come as residents believed enforcement of the Monday sit-at-home order was diminishing across the state.

The attack highlights the escalating violence in the region, attributed to various militia groups, including those linked to Simon Ekpa, who claims leadership of a faction of the Biafra movement. Reports indicate that the violence has led to widespread fear among residents, contributing to a significant decline in economic activities as many adhere to the sit-at-home orders out of fear for their safety.

Local leaders, including Senator Victor Umeh, have condemned the violence and criticized the state government’s inability to ensure security. Umeh emphasized that such incidents not only endanger lives but also deter investments and disrupt community life in Anambra.
