On Tuesday, the Nigerian Senate held a special plenary session to honor the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South in the National Assembly.

The session was dedicated entirely in memory of Ubah, who tragically passed away. His casket lay in state at the foyer of the White House wing, just outside the Senate Chamber, where members and dignitaries paid their respects.

The session featured a single agenda item: “Valedictory Session”, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele leading the ceremony. Akpabio was seen in traditional Isi-Enyi attire, complete with a red cap and dark sunglasses, while Bamidele wore Isi-Agwu attire in a sign of cultural respect.

Ubah’s seat in the chamber was draped with flowers and the Nigerian flag, a poignant reminder of his service to the country. The session was open to invited dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Governor of Anambra State Chris Ngige, and former Senator Uche Ekwunife, who attended the somber occasion.

In addition, the wives of key Senate officers—Ekaette Akpabio, wife of the Senate President; Hajiya Jibrin Barau, wife of the Deputy Senate President; and Oluyemisi Bamidele, wife of the Senate Leader—were also present to show their respects. Earlier in the day, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas and other House leaders led a procession around Ubah’s casket, further demonstrating the unity and solemnity of the moment.

The atmosphere throughout the session was heavy with emotion as senators and dignitaries reflected on Ubah’s contributions to the legislative body. His untimely passing has left a void in the National Assembly, and the Senate’s tribute served as a fitting farewell to a dedicated lawmaker.
