Nigeria’s Super Eagles wrapped up their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, Group D qualifiers with a shock  2-1 defeat to Rwanda on Monday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Though the Super Eagles had already secured their place in the tournament in Morocco, the loss highlighted defensive vulnerabilities and Rwanda’s resilience.

Samuel Chukwueze opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 59th minute, igniting hopes of a home victory. However, Rwanda equalized through Aimable Mutinzi in the 72nd minute. Just three minutes later, Imanishimwe Nshuti capitalized on a defensive lapse to deliver the decisive blow, sealing an unforgettable triumph for the visitors.

The first half was marked by missed opportunities, with both sides struggling to break the deadlock. Nigeria dominated early in the second half, but Rwanda’s disciplined defense and opportunistic attacks turned the tide.

Despite the loss, Nigeria finished top of Group D with 11 points from three wins, two draws, and one loss. Benin joined them in qualification after edging Rwanda on goal difference, both securing 8 points. Libya concluded the campaign in last place with 5 points.

The Super Eagles’ focus now shifts to their AFCON 2025 preparations, with an emphasis on tightening their defense to avoid similar setbacks in the tournament.

Credible news recalls that Nigeria’s first choice goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, left camp due to the passing of his father and Aina has returned to Nottingham Forest for club duties.

Lookman, who picked up an injury during Thursday’s match (November 14th) against Benin Republic, also exited the camp.

“Ademola Lookman, who has two goals in the qualifiers like his teammate Victor Osimhen, suffered a knock during the double-header against Benin Republic’s Cheetahs in Abidjan on Thursday and left camp on Saturday,” a statement read.
